Angie

Josephine’s words tore through to my very soul. She was right. Everyone was in danger because of me. I’d put all of them and the purity of magic at risk just for existing. What would have happened had I not stopped at that pub all those weeks ago and been told about a charming little village where I would find what I was searching for? Would I still have found Chris? Would James have still tracked me down and flushed me out? Would we be in this exact situation now? I had no idea, but I couldn’t help the bone-crushing guilt that tore through me. This was my fault.

When I walked in, the elves that just a few weeks ago welcomed me were now giving me a wide berth. The reindeer all had distrustful expressions on their faces. I couldn’t even blame them since they were in a cave with wolves tending to the injuries of one of their own because of me.

There were elves all over the small cave. The roof of the cave was high and there were what looked to be manmade slabs of stone throughout the space. Were the wolf pack shifters as well? There were a few places where stalactites jutted up from the ground and we walked to a ring of boulders that resembled some kind of meeting spot. The boulders were just the right height to sit on.

“Listen up, assholes,” Price roared through the small space. He jumped on one of the nearby rocks so that everyone could see him.

I covered my eyes in embarrassment. What was he doing? They could think whatever they wanted about me.

“Josephine was a bitter little elf, and she’s been removed. This is going to go one of two ways. You all are going to stop being assholes and blaming my friend for simply existing. She has no control over what she is. Or you can follow that bitch Josephine into exile. Decide. Now. If you stay, you treat Angie with the respect she deserves as Chris’ mate. Anything less, you’ll have to deal with me.”

“And me.” A man I’d never seen before limped forward. His stomach was wrapped. Traces of blood spotted the dressing. It was Dash, and he was standing up for me even though he was injured because of me. His shaggy blond hair was mussed, and even through the bandages on his gut, I could tell he was all lean, sinewy muscles. His bright topaz eyes surveyed everyone with anger. He held a hand over his wound and he smiled and winked at me. “Angie isn’t to blame for others' actions. She’s a victim just like the rest of us. If you wish to blame her on my behalf, save your breath and leave now.”

I bristled at his words, but I couldn’t deny that they were the truth. I was a victim. I had been my whole life.

“I don’t think you’re a victim, my love. You’re a survivor. The difference between the two is a survivor does everything in their power to continue on.
